Momentum:

How Shared Journeys Shape Individual Growth

Feb 15 - 16, 2025

Yanling Zhang and Qianru Zhang

What drives personal transformation? Is growth a solitary pursuit, or does it depend on the momentum of those around us? Flowing Space is pleased to announce Momentum,a duo exhibition that delves into the subtle interplay between individual aspirations and communal energy, presenting the work of Yanling Zhang and Qianru Zhang, two artists whose practices intersect at the crossroads of design, technology, and human connection.

Through their respective explorations—one in the structured world of digital goal-setting, the other in the unspoken rhythms of skateboarding subcultures—Yanling and Qianru examine how accountability, shared experiences, and the spaces we inhabit shape our evolving identities. Their works do not offer definitive answers but instead create interactive and participatory experiences that invite audiences to reflect on their own journeys, questioning how the people, spaces, and systems around them influence the way they move forward.

At its core, Momentum is a dialogue between their perspectives. Yanling’s practice as a product designer focuses on creating structured systems for connection—her work dissects the dynamics of digital communities, revealing how social accountability can drive motivation and foster deep interpersonal bonds. In contrast, Qianru’s interdisciplinary approach is more fluid, embracing shared experiences as an organic, self-sustaining ecosystem of collective learning and expression. Together, their works oscillate between structure and spontaneity, mirroring the push and pull of personal growth within a communal framework.

Rather than presenting static works, this exhibition is built as an interactive environment, where visitors are invited to engage, participate, and reflect. Whether through digital interfaces, interactive installations, or immersive storytelling, Yanling and Qianru seek to create spaces that blur the line between audience and participant, transforming observation into action, and introspection into connection.

Through this exhibition, Yanling and Qianru invite us to reconsider the environments—both digital and physical—that shape our personal trajectories. How do structured communities provide the scaffolding for self-improvement? How do fluid, unregulated collectives offer space for organic growth? And most importantly, how do we, as individuals, navigate the balance between personal agency and communal influence?

Momentum is not about finding definitive answers but about recognizing the invisible forces that push us forward. Whether through the structured precision of a digital goal-setting platform or the intuitive rhythms of a skateboarding community, Yanling and Qianru remind us that personal progress is never truly an individual act—it is always in motion, always shaped by the momentum of those around us.
